My Garden's Story

I inherited a large, well-established garden that had been neglected for years. It has become an everyday project filled with work and continuous learning. It features a large fern and shade garden, a vibrant coleus and Begonia bed, a classic geranium bed, a fragrant rose bed, native trees and shrubs, and a charming cottage garden area.

Lessons Learned: Watch and Wait

One of the most memorable lessons I've learned is to "watch and wait." Initially, I didn't properly gauge the amount of light or drainage in my beds, leading to plants being placed in the wrong locations. I also discovered very poor soil health, which required significant soil amendments to correct.

Advice for Newcastle & Port Stephens Gardeners

For beginner gardeners in Sydney, my best advice is to know your soil type and soil pH in different beds. Also, use what's selling well in local nurseries as a guide for which plants thrive in your area. Local nurseries know best!

Proudest Plants

I'm most proud of my ferns, which have created a lush ground cover of native violets. I also adore my vibrant cottage garden, filled with colour and texture.
